Fuente Piedra
Fuente Piedra is just about my favourite village in Andalucia. Famous for the nearby salt water lake which is home to Europe’s biggest breeding colony of Flamingos, I like it for the people! They have their own special brand of humour which ensures that every fiesta is special.
The village has grown in recent times as the developers have encroached but fortunately the recession came before they could do too much damage.
The heart of the village is the old square with it’s benches, restaurants and bars. And there are a few shops left which haven’t been taken over by estate agents. Pride of place however go’s to the old stone fountain which, so the story goes, gave the village it’s name. Apparently the water from the spring was great for dissolving gall stones.
There is also a weekly market and again on the main square a municipal produce market open on week day mornings.
Ok, it’s a great place to live but if you must get away that’s easy to. The Sevilla – Malaga/Granada motorway runs past the village, the AVE high speed train station is about 10 minutes drive and Malaga airport and the costa are about 45 minutes. Historic Antequera with it’s ancient buildings and excellent modern shopping (and restaurants) and golf course is under 15 minutes.
The popularity of the town in recent years saw property prices go sky high. For that reason we have haven’t been active locally but I am delighted to say that we now have some real bargains available in Fuente Piedra once again.
